CEFR English level A1Inspection and accreditation code of the UK government: Ofqual 603/0506/X

According to Common European Framework Reference (CEFR), English level A1 is the first level of English. At this level, learners can communicate and exchange simple information, ask and answer questions about personal information such as where they live, people they know, and things they have. They can start simple conversations using basic expressions within familiar topics.

CEFR English level A1, the Ofqual verification code 603/0506/X, is recognised in the UK, Europe, and most countries and territories, including Vietnam, where CEFR 6 levels are applied. 

Learners can learn, practice and take global exams through London Language College’s PPP (Practice & Preparation Provider).

Training listening skills for CEFR A1 learners

Overall listening skills:

  • Can follow a slow and carefully articulated speech, with pauses to receive and process the information.

Listening to the interaction between native speakers or those who are not directly conversing with

  • Can understand very short and simple structured conversations about personal topics, school, and basic needs.

Listen to the announcements, instructions, guidelines.

  • Can understand and follow directions and instructions announced slowly and carefully.

Training speaking skills for CEFR A1 learners

Overall monologue skills:

  • Can make and respond to simple statements relating to familiar topics such as oneself, family, school, or minimal daily communication needs.

Monologue: Describing the experience

  • Can describe someone, what they do and where they live.

Monologue: Presenting to the audiences

  • Can read a short, rehearsed statement – e.g. to introduce a speaker, propose a toast.

Overall interactive speaking skills:

  • Can interact using simple English with  slow speech and often asking for repetition or re-describing when communicating with others. Can ask and answer simple questions, start and make a conversation in areas of interest and familiar topics using simple expressions.

Interactive speaking: Conversation

  • Can make an introduction, greeting and saying goodbye using simple English
  • Can ask people about their situation and react to those answers

Interactive speaking: Goods and service transactions

  • Can perform simple receiving and providing goods and service transactions
  • Can handle numbers, volumes, costs and time

Interactive speaking: Interviewing and being interviewed

  • Can reply in an interview about personal information without using idioms but simple and direct question and answer structures with a slow and clear speech.

Pronunciation and fluency

  • Pronounce the learnt words, phrases and expressions clearly
  • Can manage to use very short and independent utterances, mainly learnt structures, though still need much pausing to think for expressions.

Accuracy and conformance of sociolinguistics

  • Can use a few learnt grammar structures and sentence patterns
  • Can use the phrases, simple and polite expressions in daily communication, includes greetings; introductions; saying please, thank you, sorry etc.

Training reading skills for A1 CEFR learners

Overall reading comprehension

  • Can understand very short and simple texts on learnt topics such as personal information, family, school and friends, etc.

Reading for information & argument.

  • Can understand the content of simple and familiar informational materials or short descriptions, especially with visual support.

Reading for orientation

  • Can recognise familiar names, words and fundamental phrases on simple notices and in the most common daily communication situations.

Reading correspondence

  • Can understand short and simple texts on a business card
  • Can follow short and simple direction signs (e.g., to go from X to Y)

Word Processing

  • Can copy out single words and short texts presented in a standard printed format

Training writing skills for A1 CEFR learners

Overall Production writing skills

  • Can write simple independent phrases and sentences about oneself, family, school and workplace.

Production writing: Creative writing

  • Can write simple phrases and sentences about oneself and imaginary characters, where they live and what they do.

Overall interactive writing 

  • Can require or provide personal information in writing

Correspondence

  • Can write and respond to a simple postcard, fill in simple documents and forms

Taking notes, texting and filling in forms

  • Can write down numbers, dates, name, nationality, address, age, date of birth when coming to a country etc., for example: fill in the hotel registration form.

Word Processing

  • Can copy out single words and short texts presented in a standard printed format

General linguistic criteria

  • Has a fundamental knowledge of simple expressions about personal information and specific needs.

Vocabulary range

  • Has a fundamental vocabulary source of independent words and phrases related to specific situations.

Grammatical accuracy

  • Can manage to use some simple learnt grammatical structures and sentence patterns sparingly.

Orthographic accuracy

  • Can copy familiar words and short phrases such as simple signs or instructions, names of daily supplies, shops, and commonly used phrases. Can spell their address, nationality and other personal information correctly.

Listening skill

  • I can recognise familiar words and basic phrases about myself, my family and the surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.

Reading skill

  • I can recognise familiar words and basic phrases about myself, my family and my surroundings. I can understand very short and simple texts on the advertisements and notices.

Interactive skills after LRN CEFR A1

Interactive speaking

  • I can ask and answer simple questions on very familiar topics about myself, family and school when the other people speak slowly, clearly and sometimes repeat the sentences to help me understand and express what I want to say better.

Interactive writing

  • I can write a short, simple postcard, for example, sending holiday greetings. I can fill my personal information in the form; for example, write down my name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.

Applicable skills after completing LRN CEFR A1

Speaking

  • I can use simple phrases and sentences to describe familiar topics about myself, family and school.

The preparation pack will help students familiarise themselves with the London Language College’s global exam; be equipped with methods and ready mentality for the best completion of the exam process.

Marking and result evaluation

Results Information

Process of announcing the CEFR English exam results:

  • Exam report – Statement of Result (SoR) & e-certificate within 30 working days. SoR will email each candidate or send the report via the PPP system of London Language College.
  • Hard-copy certificates will be delivered within 45 working days upon the date of result availability. Candidates can also contact authorised PPPs of London language college to receive.
